A Seattle-area startup, Solius Labs, has successfully secured $23 million in Series A funding and launched the Solius Pro, a $2,995 UVB light therapy device designed for both home and professional use. This innovative technology, which allows users to receive light therapy in under five minutes, represents a significant advancement in personal health care.
The Solius Pro device, comparable in size to a large laptop, hangs on the wall and scans the user’s skin to provide a personalized UVB light dosage at a specific wavelength of 293 nanometers. Controlled via a smartphone app, it aims to enhance vitamin D production safely and efficiently without the need for a clinician's presence. The FDA has classified this device as a Class II medical product, particularly for users aged 22 and older.
Previously, Solius developed large light therapy kiosks used in clinical environments, and with CEO Chris Kiple at the helm since 2023, the company is pivoting towards a more accessible home solution. The technology's skin-scanning system is patent-pending, crucial for ensuring effective treatments that account for varying skin types, thus minimizing the risks associated with UVB exposure.
