Endurance Energy, a startup from Seattle, has successfully secured $54 million in funding to advance its innovative geothermal energy technology designed for undersea applications. The company is focused on harnessing heat from volcanic systems beneath the ocean floor, aiming to deliver electricity to the power grid within two years.
Founded by former SpaceX engineer Andrew Redd in 2024, Endurance has already completed four prototype deployments to depths of nearly 1,000 feet at deep-sea volcanoes, where water can reach temperatures of 728 degrees Fahrenheit. This fall, the company plans to deploy its first complete system, a 100 kilowatt generator named “Adelie,” at the Juan de Fuca Ridge, situated off the coasts of Washington and Oregon.
The geothermal sector is gaining traction as a reliable source of clean energy. Currently, geothermal energy contributes only 0.4% to U.S. power generation; however, its potential for continuous, carbon-free electricity generation is prompting further investment and development in the field.
