Matt Oppenheimer, co-founder of Remitly, has transitioned from his role as CEO to chairman after nearly 15 years at the helm. This change was announced on Wednesday, with Sebastian Gunningham stepping in as the new CEO. Gunningham brings extensive experience from his previous positions leading Amazon's marketplace and payments divisions.
Oppenheimer's leadership was pivotal in scaling Remitly from a small startup into a major player in the remittance industry, serving over 9 million users worldwide. The company went public in 2021, achieving a valuation close to $7 billion and reporting a revenue of $442.2 million in the fourth quarter of the previous year, marking a 26% increase year-over-year.
Remitly's innovative mobile technology simplifies international money transfers, eliminating the need for traditional in-person agents and extensive paperwork. Looking ahead, the company expects to achieve its first year of GAAP profitability in 2025. Oppenheimer emphasized the importance of focusing on the core problems faced by customers, advising future entrepreneurs to prioritize impact over specific product ideas.
