Portal Space Systems, located in Bothell, Washington, has secured $50 million in a funding round aimed at accelerating the development of its innovative space vehicles. This investment highlights the company’s ambition to enhance its capabilities and expedite the launch of its first spacecraft, Starburst-1, which is expected to launch in October as part of SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission.
The funding round was primarily led by Geodesic Capital and Mach33, with contributions from Booz Allen Ventures, AlleyCorp, and FUSE. This new capital builds upon a previous $17.5 million seed round announced last year. CEO Jeff Thornburg, who co-founded Portal in 2021, emphasized the significance of this funding in allowing the company to accelerate its development process.
Portal plans to relocate to a new 52,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, where it will produce not only Starburst spacecraft but also the more advanced Supernova vehicles. The Supernova is designed with a solar thermal propulsion system that allows for rapid orbital adjustments, significantly improving maneuverability compared to traditional methods.
