During the recent Seattle AI Startup Summit, Yifan Zhang, co-managing director of AI2 Incubator and founder of AI House, emphasized the potential advantages of building startups in the Pacific Northwest over relocating to San Francisco. Zhang's remarks were part of a broader discussion addressing the ongoing debate between these two tech hubs.
In her speech, she categorized startups into two types: “butter” startups, which thrive on seamless execution and user experience, and “sand in the gears” startups, which face more complex challenges but can build defensibility against competitors. She argued that the characteristics making San Francisco appealing might hinder those working on more intricate projects.
Zhang highlighted the 2023 inception of AI2 Incubator portfolio company Friday Harbor, which tackles the intricate task of utilizing AI for mortgage qualification. She pointed out that the evolution of AI technology could enhance the capabilities of such startups, particularly those navigating regulatory and human relationship complexities.
