Zap Energy has initiated a groundbreaking strategy by pursuing both fusion and fission energy technologies, aiming to address the increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions. The company appointed Zabrina Johal as CEO, taking over from co-founder Benj Conway, who will now serve as president.
Zap's dual approach challenges the traditional separation between fusion and fission, which are often viewed as distinct due to public concerns regarding safety and waste from fission reactors. According to Conway, merging these technologies under a single platform will enable more rapid advancement and mitigate risks associated with energy production.
With over $330 million raised since its inception nine years ago, Zap Energy has been actively developing its fusion technology and aims to make a fission solution available by the early 2030s. The urgency for new energy sources has intensified as various sectors, including technology and transportation, seek to reduce carbon emissions and electrify their operations.
