The distance of a marathon, measuring 26.2 miles, has been officially surpassed by NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars. This milestone was reached on June 14, five years after the rover's landing. Perseverance achieved this remarkable feat despite a maximum speed of just 0.1 mph, highlighting the challenges of exploring the Martian surface.
NASA noted that Perseverance is the second rover, following Opportunity, to complete a marathon on another planet, with Opportunity taking over 11 years to reach the same distance. In contrast, the Curiosity rover, active since 2012, has covered slightly over 23 miles.
Currently, Perseverance is navigating ancient terrains near Jezero Crater, where it has uncovered signs of a former lake and potential evidence of past life. Recently, the rover transmitted images from its exploration, including a selfie taken during its journey.
