TerraPower, backed by Bill Gates, anticipates receiving federal permits within weeks to commence construction on its innovative nuclear power plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming. This approval could position the company “a year ahead of anyone else,” according to CEO Chris Levesque, emphasizing TerraPower's leadership in the U.S. nuclear sector.
The nuclear industry, previously stagnant for decades, is witnessing a surge in activity as technology companies seek to meet rising energy demands. TerraPower is pioneering a model focused on smaller, cost-effective nuclear reactors, aiming for production timelines of just three years using prefabricated components.
Construction on the demonstration plant began in 2024, with the goal to initiate operations by the end of 2030. The plant will utilize Natrium technology, featuring reactors capable of delivering 345 megawatts, with potential boosts to 500 megawatts through a molten-salt thermal battery.
Recently, TerraPower formed a partnership with Meta to explore the construction of up to eight advanced reactors in the U.S., with the first expected to be operational by 2032. Additionally, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power has joined as an investor, contributing to a $250 million investment, further bolstering TerraPower's initiatives.
