The Seattle Universal Math Museum (SUMM) celebrated its grand opening on March 14, coinciding with Pi Day, marking a significant addition to the local educational landscape. Founded by Tracy Drinkwater, the museum aims to create a playful and engaging atmosphere for learning math, moving away from traditional, pressure-filled educational methods.
Drinkwater, who previously taught middle and high school, has been recognized for her innovative approach to STEM education. She will receive the STEM Educator of the Year award at the upcoming GeekWire Awards, alongside Fidel Ferrer of Portland’s Project LEDO. This event is set for May 7 at Seattle’s Showbox SoDo, sponsored by First Tech.
SUMM, located in Kent, Washington, has already attracted over 1,000 visitors and plans to host its inaugural school field trip next month. The museum features interactive exhibits, including a giant Etch A Sketch-like device that illustrates mathematical concepts through collaborative play. Guests are encouraged to make a $5 donation for entry, allowing for a hands-on approach to understanding math through games and puzzles.
