Starfish Space's Otter Pup 2 satellite, launched in June, is preparing for a significant docking mission with the ElaraSat satellite, developed by Gilmour Space. This test mission aims to demonstrate autonomous rendezvous and docking capabilities critical for future sustainable space operations.
Trevor Bennett, co-founder of Starfish Space, indicated that the switch from the D-Orbit ION satellite to ElaraSat was made due to unspecified reasons. Both satellites were part of the same SpaceX rideshare launch. Gilmour Space’s Mark Grimminck expressed enthusiasm about collaborating on this ambitious project, highlighting its potential to transform satellite operations.
Otter Pup 2's success will pave the way for Starfish's larger Otter spacecraft, designed for satellite inspection, servicing, or disposal. Despite the challenges faced by the earlier prototype, Otter Pup 2 remains operational and healthy, with plans to maintain its functionality over the next few months as it approaches this critical docking milestone.
