The newly launched Brain Health Accelerator at the Allen Institute aims to develop innovative gene therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, backed by an initial funding of $200 million. This Seattle-based initiative, which is part of the organization founded by Paul Allen, will focus on diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and ALS.
Ed Lein, who leads the accelerator, emphasized that this marks the first time the institute will prioritize disease treatment since its inception in 2003. Starting with nearly 60 personnel, the initiative plans to expand to a workforce of about 200 over time.
Funding for the accelerator is sourced from the Fund for Science and Technology, which Allen’s estate established with a $3.1 billion endowment. Lein anticipates that total funding will increase as more partners join the effort, which will also seek financial support from federal grants, including those from the National Institutes of Health.
