Ubisoft has temporarily disabled the marketplace for its popular online shooter Rainbow Six Siege following a significant incident over the weekend involving a massive distribution of in-game currency. Players reportedly received 2 billion credits each, an amount valued at approximately $13.3 million if purchased legitimately. The servers for the game were taken offline on Saturday and Sunday to address the situation.
While the company has restored server access, it anticipates players may encounter long wait times when logging in. Ubisoft is currently investigating the event and plans to implement corrections in the upcoming two weeks. The firm has not officially labeled the incident as a hack but acknowledged the presence of irregularities affecting gameplay.
In addition to the currency issue, some players were exposed to inappropriate messages during the incident. Despite the chaos, Ubisoft reassured users that spending the credits received during this period would not lead to bans. The company aims to rectify the situation quickly, especially with the holiday gaming season in full swing, which could impact their revenue from in-game purchases.
