In the first quarter of 2026, Microsoft experienced a notable stock decline of approximately 25%, marking its most significant quarterly drop since the financial crisis of 2008. This downturn has raised questions regarding the company's long-term health, especially given its recent strong financial results.
Feroze Motafram, an operations consultant and founder of Avestan LLC, highlighted his observations from living in Sammamish, Washington, near Microsoft’s headquarters. He noted that conversations among Microsoft employees often center around internal dynamics rather than customer engagement, suggesting a shift in focus from innovation to organizational navigation.
Motafram, who has a background in electrical engineering and extensive experience in executive roles at Fortune 100 companies, emphasized the importance of recognizing patterns in corporate behavior. He pointed out that a significant portion of Microsoft's future revenue is tied to OpenAI, which has recently entered a cloud agreement with Amazon, raising concerns about dependency on a startup that is not yet profitable.
