This technology enabled firefighters to control the Diamond Fire, limiting its spread to just 7 acres (approximately 2.8 hectares). The swift identification of the fire prompted alerts to the state’s forest service and Arizona Public Service, which operates nearly 40 AI smoke-detection cameras and plans to expand this number to 71 by the end of summer.
As climate change exacerbates wildfire risks across the West, states are increasingly turning to AI to enhance their detection and prevention efforts. Xcel Energy has already deployed 126 AI cameras in Colorado and aims to extend their use to seven states by year’s end. Meanwhile, California's ALERTCalifornia network boasts around 1,240 AI-enabled cameras to monitor potential fire threats effectively.
Experts emphasize the necessity of human oversight to reduce false alarms and improve the technology's precision. Brent Pascua from Cal Fire highlighted the benefits of AI in monitoring remote areas, stating that it often allows responders to initiate action before a 911 call is made.
