OpenAI has announced its intention to comply with a new executive order from President Donald Trump regarding advanced AI model oversight. The order, which has faced scrutiny from the tech industry, aims to ensure public safety in the deployment of AI technologies.
Originally, the order required companies to submit their models for review 90 days prior to public release. However, following pressure from industry leaders like Elon Musk and David Sacks, the timeline was shortened to 30 days. This modified directive asks AI firms to engage in a benchmarking process to evaluate the capabilities of their models, which could categorize them as "covered frontier models," thereby affecting their distribution.
George Osborne, OpenAI's head of countries, emphasized the importance of regulatory bodies in overseeing AI deployment. Critics, however, argue that the new order does not provide adequate measures to manage potentially hazardous AI technologies, reflecting a broader trend in the Trump administration's approach to AI regulation.
