In a significant move, Getty Images has formed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to integrate its licensed content into the AI company's platforms, including ChatGPT. This partnership aims to enhance the visual experience for users by providing high-quality, licensed imagery, as noted by Getty's CEO, Craig Peters.
Previously, Getty had maintained a strict policy against AI-generated content, even banning it from its library in September 2022. Despite this, the company has shifted its stance, launching its own generative AI tool and entering into a similar collaboration with Perplexity AI in October 2025. This earlier agreement allowed Perplexity's AI tools access to Getty's library while ensuring proper licensing practices.
While details regarding whether Getty's images will be utilized for AI training remain undisclosed, the company’s evolving approach signals a notable change in its strategy towards collaboration with AI technologies.
