The launch of Skylight's new AI agent, Shippy, aims to assist maritime analysts by answering straightforward questions about global ocean activities, including illegal fishing and vessel tracking. This tool is built upon Skylight's extensive vessel-tracking and satellite data, providing links to underlying records for verification and reproducibility.
Skylight, developed by the Allen Institute for AI in Seattle, has been instrumental in tackling issues related to illegal fishing, which results in significant financial losses, particularly affecting developing nations reliant on their fisheries. With a user base exceeding 300 organizations across roughly 70 countries, the platform utilizes a combination of free satellite data and commercial imagery to monitor suspicious maritime behaviors.
Currently, Shippy is available at no cost to governments and qualifying organizations, although access is initially limited to select partners. Skylight anticipates broadening its availability as the tool undergoes enhancements. The initiative reflects a strategic pivot at Ai2 towards leveraging AI to solve concrete challenges, especially as the organization reassesses its competitive stance against larger tech firms.
