A recent report by Sweden's Svenska Dagbladet highlights significant privacy concerns regarding users of Meta's AI smart glasses in Europe. The investigation revealed that users might be unintentionally disclosing private video footage and sensitive financial data to moderators located outside the European Union, specifically in Kenya.
Employees involved in AI data annotation reported witnessing various forms of intimate content, including nudity and sexual activity, alongside sensitive information like credit card numbers. By using Meta's Ray-Ban Display and similar AI-enabled glasses, users consent to terms that permit human review of the data collected, which is essential for training the AI's large language models.
Concerns regarding compliance with GDPR regulations have been raised, especially since these rules mandate transparency in personal data processing. Despite the gravity of the situation, Meta has refrained from directly addressing the claims, stating only that media processed through their AI adheres to established terms of service and privacy guidelines.
