Perplexity has announced a significant enhancement to its AI-powered search engine, aiming to transform personal devices into decentralized data centers. Beginning in July, the new hybrid local-server system will be integrated into the Personal Computer application, allowing the AI agent to efficiently manage tasks by determining whether they should be processed locally or via cloud-based AI models.
The application can now handle sensitive tasks, like managing financial and health information, directly on users' devices, while more complex computations can be offloaded to powerful cloud servers. This system aims to optimize performance by automatically splitting larger tasks and directing them to the most suitable processing location.
Currently, Personal Computer is available on Mac and is set to expand to Windows platforms soon. Perplexity emphasizes the versatility of its technology, which is compatible with various hardware, including Intel and Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, reducing reliance on costly cloud resources for routine tasks.
