A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against OpenAI concerning the suicide of Alice Carrier, who passed away on July 2, 2025. This legal action follows claims that the chatbot ChatGPT failed to provide adequate safeguards for users expressing suicidal thoughts. The suit argues that Alice communicated her distress to the chatbot prior to her death, alleging negligence on OpenAI's part for not intervening or alerting her family.
The lawsuit seeks to hold OpenAI accountable for its design choices, which are claimed to have contributed to the tragic outcome. Legal representatives from Susman Godfrey, including Justin Nelson, emphasize the importance of accountability in this case. This is not the first instance of OpenAI facing legal scrutiny; it has previously been implicated in similar lawsuits regarding its chatbot's role in user suicides and harmful advice.
In response to these concerns, OpenAI introduced parental controls for ChatGPT last year and recently added a feature aimed at contacting someone if a user reveals suicidal thoughts, although this option is not automatically enabled and is limited to adult users.
