Amazon Web Services (AWS) has shifted its approach to product development in the agentic AI division, emphasizing prototype creation over traditional documentation methods. This change, initiated by Swami Sivasubramanian, VP of agentic AI, reflects a broader strategy to adapt to the evolving capabilities of coding tools and the current demands of AI projects.
Sivasubramanian noted the effectiveness of starting with a working demo rather than drafting a conventional six-page "PRFAQ." This adjustment aims to foster innovation and responsiveness within small teams, which align with the company's original ethos of operating like a startup. The AWS agentic AI division is structured into small units, designed to be manageable enough to be fed by just two pizzas, a principle from Amazon's early days.
Under the guidance of Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, this division was established last year. Sivasubramanian emphasized that the scale of AI projects has decreased significantly, allowing teams of six to eight to accomplish tasks that previously required larger groups. The new direction is exemplified by the Amazon Quick desktop application, which integrates various productivity tools and leverages AI for enhanced functionality.
