Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence firm, has successfully secured £628 million (approximately $830 million) in debt financing aimed at establishing a new data center in Bruyères-le-Châtel, near Paris. This funding will enable the acquisition of 13,800 Nvidia chips for a facility with a capacity of 44 megawatts, which marks a significant milestone as the company's first major venture into debt financing.
Chief Executive Arthur Mensch emphasized the importance of this development, stating that expanding their infrastructure in Europe is vital to support their clients and foster AI innovation locally. This strategic move indicates a shift in the European AI landscape, with Mistral choosing hardware financing over traditional equity funding.
As demand for AI infrastructure grows among businesses and government entities, Mistral's initiative reflects a changing approach within the industry, where AI companies are positioning themselves as direct owners of computational resources. Currently, external players like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud dominate around 70% of the European cloud market.
Participation from major banks, including BNP Paribas and HSBC, highlights increasing confidence in AI infrastructure as a viable asset class, suggesting a potential shift in how CIOs and CTOs will source their computational needs in the future.
