At least 10 researchers from the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) have transitioned to Microsoft, significantly impacting the institute’s operations. This includes key figures associated with Ai2's flagship open-source model initiative, OLMo.
Among those who moved to Microsoft are former Ai2 CEO Ali Farhadi, former COO Sophie Lebrecht, and research leads Hanna Hajishirzi and Ranjay Krishna. Additional team members now at Microsoft include Luca Soldaini, Kyle Lo, Dirk Groeneveld, Pete Walsh, Matt Jordan, and Jake Poznanski. These individuals have joined the Superintelligence team under Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, focusing on advanced AI systems in various sectors.
Ai2 acknowledged the departures, stating that their mission to develop an open AI ecosystem remains unchanged. A spokesperson emphasized that Ai2 continues to pursue its goals in advancing AI for health, science, and environmental research, highlighted by the recent launch of a new computing cluster as part of a $152 million initiative supported by the NSF and Nvidia.
Earlier in March, challenges related to funding and competition in the AI field were noted by Ai2 board chair Bill Hilf, who remarked on the difficulties of conducting large-scale model research as a nonprofit.
