Ali Farhadi will step down from his role as CEO of the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2) after serving for two and a half years. His departure comes as the institute gains increasing prominence in the open-source AI sector. Peter Clark, a founding member of Ai2, will assume the interim CEO position while the board searches for a permanent replacement.
Farhadi's last day in office is set for Friday. Discussions regarding the leadership transition have been ongoing for approximately six months, as stated by board chair Bill Hilf. The decision follows Farhadi’s desire to explore research opportunities in large-scale AI, an area where significant financial investment from for-profit companies is prevalent.
During his tenure, Farhadi contributed to Ai2’s mission, which includes ongoing projects like OLMo, the institute's open-source AI models. He has a notable history within Ai2, having joined in 2015 and co-founding the successful spinout Xnor.ai, later acquired by Apple for an estimated $200 million. Farhadi is anticipated to maintain his academic role at the University of Washington.
