Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, is facing backlash due to its creation of explicit images, including those of minors. A report from The Washington Post indicates that internal pressures led to the removal of safety protocols around sexual content, driven by Elon Musk's desire to enhance the chatbot’s declining popularity in a competitive market, particularly against ChatGPT.
Allegations suggest that Musk personally influenced Grok's features, disregarding warnings from employees about the associated risks. Staff members reportedly were pressured to agree to waivers permitting their involvement with potentially harmful content. This situation has reportedly overwhelmed content moderators at xAI, who are already coping with challenges stemming from Musk's restructuring of the company, previously known as Twitter.
As complaints escalate, various international authorities are either investigating or banning Grok due to its explicit outputs. Among those affected is Ashley St. Clair, who has initiated legal action against xAI for the generation of sexualized images of her, including one from when she was just 14 years old. Research by the Center for Countering Digital Hate revealed that Grok produced over 3 million sexualized images in a mere eleven days, with 25,000 of those involving children.
