In December 2025, Google transitioned from calling its AI-generated headlines in Discover an "experiment" to labeling it a new "feature." This change followed a series of misleading and inaccurate headlines that raised concerns among users and publishers alike. For instance, a story titled 'Don’t buy a Qi2 25W wireless charger hoping for faster speeds – just get the ‘slower’ one instead' was misrepresented as 'Qi2 slows older Pixels.' Similarly, Ars Technica's piece about Valve’s Steam Machine was altered from its original title to 'Steam Machine price revealed.'
Google's spokesperson, Jennifer Kutz, emphasized that the feature is designed to provide users with an AI-powered overview of topics covered by various creators, including a featured image and links to related articles. The headlines generated aim to summarize information from multiple sources rather than rephrasing individual article titles. According to the company, this feature has resulted in improved user satisfaction.
The tech giant maintains that it does not analyze individual titles for retitling but focuses on trending topics with extensive coverage. As Google continues to refine the user interface, it aims to enhance content exploration through Discover.
