In a groundbreaking legal settlement, Anthropic is required to pay $1.5 billion to approximately half a million authors for using their copyrighted works without consent to train its AI models. This case has highlighted significant concerns within the publishing industry regarding copyright infringement and the use of AI.
Author Maureen Johnson, known for her successful young adult novels, has expressed frustrations with the claims process, citing issues with the website designed to facilitate claims. Each author is expected to receive around $3,000 per book, but the actual payout will be diminished after sharing with publishers.
A judge previously ruled that while Anthropic's use of the books without permission constituted piracy, the company argued that their subsequent AI technologies did not include any pirated material. A fairness hearing for the settlement is scheduled for May 14.
Similar legal actions are underway against other tech giants, including Meta and OpenAI, as the debate over copyright and AI technology continues to evolve.
