With a significant rise in AI adoption, a recent survey by Ellucian indicates that 66% of higher education institutions are currently utilizing AI, a substantial increase from 49% last year. Conducted among 779 faculty and administrators from over 300 institutions in the U.S. and Canada, the findings suggest that strategic integration of AI is becoming a priority for academic leaders.
Looking ahead, 88% of respondents expect an increase in AI utilization within the next two years. Despite this positive trend, challenges related to privacy and trust remain pivotal in shaping the approach to AI technology in schools. Laura Ipsen, President and CEO of Ellucian, emphasized the need for responsible scaling of AI while prioritizing data protection and trust-building.
Moreover, 90% of participants reported using AI, up from 84% in the previous year. Approximately 43% of institutions have included AI in their strategic planning, with many leaders allocating specific budgets for its integration, often within broader technology funding. The most cited beneficial applications include Business & Operations, Data & Analytics, and Marketing, demonstrating a clear focus on enhancing decision-making processes.
