Recent updates to Google's Messages for Android app have introduced several new features, enhancing user experience in group conversations. The ability to mention individuals in group chats, even if their notifications are muted, has seen a gradual rollout, although it is not yet fully available to all users.
Among the latest changes, a redesigned long-press menu allows users to access a floating menu while viewing messages or images. This feature blurs the background and provides haptic feedback for a more interactive experience. Additionally, the app now supports the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, enabling end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS messaging between Android and iOS devices.
Another significant change includes the revamped read receipts, which are now displayed in a circular format at the bottom-right corner of message bubbles. This design adjustment began rolling out in August 2024 and was further tweaked in January 2025 to enhance visibility. Users can now swipe left for timestamps and encryption status, or swipe right to reply or quote messages.
These updates illustrate Google's ongoing commitment to improving the functionality and security of the Messages app, as it continues to test and refine its features.
