YouTube is piloting a new feature called “Discover videos with Previews”, aimed at helping users avoid misleading content. The initiative is currently being tested with a select group of users on the Android mobile app. When participating users access their homepage, they will see an entry card that allows them to view previews of videos already recommended to them.
This feature presents users with five to ten short clips from videos, enabling them to make quicker decisions about which content to engage with. The goal is to combat clickbait tactics that often misrepresent the actual content of videos. Although Google has not officially confirmed that this will reduce misleading content, it appears to be a significant focus of the new functionality.
While this development may enhance user experience by saving time, it raises concerns for creators. If the previews showcase essential parts of a video, viewers may opt not to watch the full content, potentially impacting creators’ engagement and revenue. Currently, there is no information on when or how the feature may be rolled out to a broader audience.
