YouTube has reached a confidential settlement with a minor, referred to as R.K.C., following claims of harm from social media platforms. This case serves as an early test amid thousands of similar lawsuits against the platform, with the plaintiff also having lawsuits filed against Meta, Snap, and TikTok, which are scheduled for trial next month.
Earlier this year, a 20-year-old known as K.G.M. won a trial against YouTube and Meta, resulting in $6 million in damages, which split evenly between both companies. YouTube has indicated plans to appeal that verdict, asserting its platform is designed for streaming rather than social interaction.
Currently, California courts are managing over 3,300 lawsuits related to social media addiction, with an additional 2,600 cases filed in federal court. These figures highlight the growing legal challenges facing YouTube and similar platforms, as they navigate the implications of potential multi-million dollar judgments.
