Effective tomorrow, Apple will implement new age verification requirements for the App Store in Texas, aligning with state law SB 2420. This law mandates that any new Apple accounts in Texas verify users' ages, particularly for minors. Consent from a parent or guardian is necessary for minors when downloading apps or significant updates, as well as for in-app purchases.
The law, which was signed in May 2025, faced delays due to legal challenges that postponed its initial enforcement date from January 1. Developers are now required to ensure that guardians can revoke consent for minors at any time. This move reflects a broader trend of age verification laws being enacted across various US states.
Previously, Apple had begun implementing similar age verification protocols for its iCloud accounts in the UK as of March. The changes in Texas mark a significant step in Apple's response to evolving regulations regarding app accessibility for younger users.
