The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently permitted the enforcement of Texas law SB 2420, impacting new Apple Accounts in the state beginning June 4. This law mandates age verification and parental consent for users under 18 engaging with app marketplaces.
Signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott last May, the legislation faced strong opposition from Apple, including efforts by CEO Tim Cook to persuade Abbott to veto it. Although a preliminary injunction had previously halted the law's implementation, the recent court ruling allows Texas to proceed with its requirements.
Developers are now required to ensure age assurance and obtain consent from parents or guardians for minors when downloading apps or making in-app purchases. Additionally, it is necessary for developers to review the relevant APIs and implement modifications to comply with the new regulations.
