The Tech Transparency Project (TTP) revealed that over 100 apps available on both the Apple and Google app stores can digitally undress individuals, raising significant concerns regarding user safety and consent. These apps, which have been collectively downloaded more than 705 million times, have generated approximately $117 million in revenue, benefitting both tech giants despite their policies against such content.
TTP's investigation uncovered 55 apps on the Google Play Store and 47 apps on the Apple App Store that facilitate the creation of nonconsensual sexualized images. This finding comes in the wake of public outcry over the use of AI tools, including Elon Musk's Grok chatbot, to produce inappropriate content.
Despite claims of prioritizing user safety, both companies continue to host these applications, which violate their stated guidelines. Google prohibits apps depicting sexual nudity and those that degrade individuals, while Apple bans content deemed offensive or sexually explicit. Neither company has provided a comment following TTP’s disclosure, although they have requested a list of the identified apps.
