OpenAI is set to introduce advertisements in ChatGPT for users on the free plan and the $8 per month “Go” plan, which offers enhanced features. This change will begin in the coming weeks and marks a significant shift in the chatbot's user experience, as it has previously been free of such promotions.
The ads will be tested in the United States and will appear at the end of responses, showcasing relevant sponsored products or services. For instance, a user inquiring about “authentic Mexican dish ideas” might see an advertisement for a grocery delivery service. OpenAI emphasizes that these ads aim to be helpful and relevant, fostering user engagement by allowing direct inquiries about advertised products.
Comparatively, the new “Go” plan is priced at less than half of the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs $20 monthly and remains ad-free. OpenAI has ensured that advertisements will not be displayed near sensitive topics or to users under 18 years old, maintaining a degree of content regulation.
