Spotify is set to enhance its podcasting capabilities by integrating Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology into its platforms, Spotify for Creators and Megaphone. This decision follows Apple’s announcement in February regarding HLS support in its Apple Podcasts app with the iOS 26.4 update, allowing previously exclusive Spotify video podcasts to reach a broader audience through Apple’s app.
The adoption of HLS brings significant advantages for video podcasts, including the ability to toggle between video and audio-only streams and to download content for offline access. Furthermore, HLS facilitates dynamic ad insertion, which is essential for creators aiming to monetize their podcasts. Major tech companies, including Microsoft and Google, already utilize this protocol, indicating a trend towards standardization in video streaming.
While Spotify has not specified a timeline for implementing HLS across its platforms, it has confirmed that audio-only RSS feeds will still be accessible for listeners using apps that do not support HLS. Additionally, Spotify is expanding its Distribution API, which now includes support from various podcast hosting platforms such as Audioboom and Libsyn. This will enable these platforms to distribute video content on Spotify and leverage the company's monetization features.
