The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued a warning regarding a sophisticated hacking strategy linked to China, which exploits everyday devices for espionage purposes. This advisory coincides with a notable increase in cyber threats originating from Beijing-backed groups targeting vulnerable equipment, particularly internet-connected devices like routers, printers, and web cameras.
During the NCSC's annual conference in Glasgow, chief executive Richard Horne highlighted the alarming level of sophistication in China's cyber operations. He noted that most of the cyber threats from China are now employing covert networks, or botnets, to obscure the origin of attacks. This shift in tactics represents a significant evolution in the methods used by Chinese hackers.
The advisory, which also involves collaboration with cybersecurity agencies from nine other nations including the US and Australia, urges businesses to enhance their cybersecurity measures. Companies are advised to implement strategies such as mapping IT systems, utilizing multifactor authentication, and restricting external device connections to mitigate risks associated with these covert networks.
