A second-production, sticker-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. has achieved a historic sale of $3 million at auction. The transaction took place on June 14, 2026, and marks a significant moment in video game collecting.
Heritage Auctions described this specific copy as the "most significant video game ever offered at auction." It has remained in pristine condition, untouched for 40 years, and is bundled with a launch edition NES Control Deck console.
This variant features a glossy sticker seal, a packaging style that was only used briefly in 1986 before Nintendo transitioned to shrink-wrapping. Only three copies with this seal are known to exist, making this one especially rare, graded at PSA 9.6 A++.
The auction house emphasized the historical value of the game, stating that it symbolizes the pivotal moment when Super Mario Bros. elevated console gaming into a significant aspect of cultural history.
