Developer Andy Nguyen has introduced a new loader that enables the installation of Linux on the PlayStation 5. Available on GitHub, this loader is compatible with the disc drive models of the console that operate on firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx. While there is potential for support of additional firmware versions in the future, this has not been prioritized by Nguyen.
This development comes as interest in Linux continues to rise, highlighted by the French government's recent decision to replace Windows with Linux in its operations. Nguyen showcased the loader by successfully running GTA 5 Enhanced with Ray Tracing, demonstrating its capabilities in a video posted last month.
Historically, the PlayStation 3 had a feature called OtherOS that allowed users to run Linux, which was later removed in firmware update 3.21, resulting in a class action lawsuit against Sony. The company settled, offering affected users a compensation of $55.
