Phil Spencer, a pivotal figure in reshaping the gaming sector, is set to retire from Microsoft after a tenure of 38 years. His departure comes as part of a broader leadership transition within Microsoft Gaming, which includes significant promotions and changes in roles.
Asha Sharma will take over as CEO of Microsoft Gaming, bringing experience from her previous roles at Instacart and Meta. The company announced her promotion on Friday, highlighting her operational expertise despite her lack of background in the gaming industry. In addition, Matt Booty has been promoted to executive vice president and chief content officer, where he will manage Microsoft’s extensive portfolio of game studios.
Spencer informed Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella of his decision to step back last fall, and they have been preparing for this transition since then. Spencer will advise during the summer to ensure a smooth handoff. Sarah Bond, the current Xbox president, will also transition out but is expected to remain with the company for a period.
In her initial communication to the gaming team, Sharma emphasized her commitment to Xbox's core fans, asserting that games are a form of art created by humans, and promised to avoid diluting the gaming experience with low-quality content.
