Phil Spencer, the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, is set to retire, as announced by Satya Nadella. Taking over Spencer's position will be Asha Sharma, the current President of Microsoft's CoreAI division. Meanwhile, Sarah Bond, who held the role of President of Xbox, is resigning to start a new chapter.
Sharma has a strong background, having previously served as COO at Instacart and a Vice President at Meta, where she contributed to scaling services that reached billions. Nadella expressed confidence in her ability to lead the gaming division into a new growth phase.
In addition to Sharma's promotion, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, is being elevated to Chief Content Officer. Spencer, who joined Microsoft in 1988 and has been integral to the Xbox brand since 2001, played a significant role in the development of Game Pass and the acquisition of various studios, including the notable $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard King.
Despite the rich portfolio of developers and intellectual property, Microsoft Gaming has faced challenges in the current console landscape, including revenue declines and layoffs. Sharma’s strategic plans remain vague, as she prepares to steer the company’s gaming operations amid these difficulties.
