The capabilities of the PlayStation 5 have expanded significantly with the successful installation of Linux, allowing the console to function similarly to a Steam Machine. This development was achieved by tinkerer Andy Nguyen, who demonstrated the process on social media, showcasing the console running Ubuntu and playing GTA V Enhanced with ray tracing enabled.
Nguyen has reported that the PS5 runs with a CPU clocked at 3.2 GHz and a GPU at 2.0 GHz, providing full USB support and 4K HDMI output. He noted that while the performance is impressive, the hardware does heat up, indicating caution if further overclocking is attempted.
Instructions for replicating this setup are expected to be released prior to the launch of GTA 6, although users will need a PS5 with older firmware to access the features. This innovation may encourage gamers to consider the PS5 as a viable option for Linux gaming, especially amidst rising RAM prices compared to traditional PC setups.
