Nvidia's new feature, Smooth Motion, aims to enhance gameplay by adding an extra frame between rendered frames, potentially doubling the perceived frame rate. This driver-level interpolation model is designed to improve the smoothness of motion in games but comes with notable limitations.
Users can enable Smooth Motion individually for each game through the Nvidia app by adjusting settings under Graphics. However, it is essential to understand that this feature does not accelerate the game's simulation or resolve issues related to CPU bottlenecks and frame pacing. The enhancement is purely visual and does not improve input responsiveness, as it generates additional frames only after the original frames have been rendered.
Unlike DLSS, which integrates deeper into game engines for improved upscaling and frame generation, Smooth Motion operates independently of game compatibility. This independence can be beneficial but may also lead to inconsistent results, making it a potentially unreliable choice for some gamers.
