Google is currently rolling out a redesigned Reading mode for Chrome on Android, enhancing user experience with a consistent appearance across various articles. Previously, this feature did not always activate for articles that could benefit from a simplified reading view, but the new version ensures its availability irrespective of the page being accessed.
Under the updated interface, users will find a "Show Reading mode" option in the three-dot menu beneath the "Listen to this page" feature. This change replaces the old address bar shortcut but retains a button for exiting Reading mode quickly. Tapping the button now opens a view that keeps the Omnibox visible, rather than covering the entire screen.
The redesign also includes a flexible Reading mode sheet that utilizes Material 3 design elements, allowing users to customize font styles, text sizes up to 250%, and background colors like light, sepia, or dark. Preferences are saved across different pages, and users can manually enable the feature through specific flags before the full rollout.
Currently, this update is being observed on a couple of Android devices running Chrome 143 in the stable channel, though it has not yet reached a broader audience.
