Individuals with tattoos may face challenges when using smartwatches and fitness trackers, particularly in terms of heart rate monitoring. The heart rate sensors in these devices rely on a technique known as photoplethysmography (PPG), which can be hindered by ink saturation and patterns in tattoos. This interference can lead to inaccurate readings.
Additionally, such devices may struggle with wrist detection if they are placed over tattooed skin, resulting in the need for frequent unlocking to interact with the device. Both Garmin and Apple have recognized this issue, advising users to wear trackers on unmarked skin for optimal performance.
For those with tattoos, several solutions have emerged. Wearing the device on the inside of the wrist, if it remains clear of tattoos, is one option. Alternatively, switching to the opposite wrist may also help, although this might feel unusual for long-time users.
