This season, the Seattle Seahawks have introduced a new accessibility initiative for blind and low-vision fans, utilizing a device developed by the Seattle startup OneCourt. This innovative technology translates live gameplay into vibrations, enabling fans to follow the action using their sense of touch.
During the pilot program, which includes other teams like the Jaguars, Vikings, and Falcons, participants tested the device at Lumen Field. The OneCourt device synchronizes with the team's radio broadcast, providing real-time audio feedback alongside the tactile experience.
Feedback collected from users will be used to enhance the NFL's in-stadium accessibility strategies. Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president for diversity and inclusion, emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that the pilot demonstrated how technology can connect fans with disabilities to the game.
Co-founded by University of Washington graduates, including CEO Jerred Mace, OneCourt previously gained recognition when the Portland Trail Blazers became the first professional sports team to implement these devices at every home game.
