The future of Nothing's CMF Phone series appears grim as the company has decided to cancel plans for a new model this year. Rising prices for essential components, particularly RAM, have made it financially unfeasible to produce a new device that meets their standards for quality and affordability.
Akis Evangelidis, co-founder of Nothing, disclosed on Twitter/X that they were developing a successor to the current CMF Phone but halted the project due to excessive memory costs. He noted that producing a device with the same specifications as the existing CMF Phone 2 Pro would require an increase of nearly 50% in pricing compared to previous offerings.
Currently, the CMF Phone 2 Pro remains out of stock, which is attributed to the ongoing increase in material costs. Nothing's CEO, Carl Pei, highlighted that RAM has become the most costly component in smartphone manufacturing, overshadowing other elements like processors and displays, and can represent over 50% of the total hardware expenses.
