The introduction of the Qi2 standard has not met user expectations, particularly for those with the Google Pixel 10. While the Wireless Power Consortium aimed to unify wireless charging through an open standard, many users are finding their devices charging at significantly slower speeds than anticipated. Instead of utilizing the expected 10W or 15W speeds, the Pixel 10 often defaults to a mere 5W when paired with certain chargers, creating frustration for owners.
Users of the Pixel 9 are also affected, as their devices encounter similar issues with newer Qi2-certified chargers. Despite investing in upgraded technology, they experience the same slowdown due to compatibility problems with the legacy Extended Power Profile (EPP). This results in a charging experience that fails to live up to the potential promised by Qi2.
As battery capacities grow and the demands of modern applications increase, the limitations of these charging standards raise concerns. The challenges do not only affect individual users but highlight a fragmentation in the wireless charging ecosystem, necessitating careful consideration of device compatibility moving forward.
