Apple has announced a new feature, Generated Subtitles, set to debut in iOS 27. This function will allow iPhone users to automatically generate subtitles for videos across various platforms, enhancing accessibility for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. By using on-device speech recognition, the feature will transcribe spoken audio for any video content lacking existing captions, including personal videos and social media clips.
Available on devices such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, the generated subtitles can be customized in both the video playback menu and Settings. However, this feature is initially limited to English and is designed for users in the U.S. and Canada. Apple is expected to expand the language options and territories in the future.
The introduction of this feature comes as captioning solutions become increasingly prevalent across various video platforms. Users will have the ability to personalize how subtitles appear during playback, enhancing their viewing experience regardless of the context.
