Hyundai has introduced its latest electric vehicle, the IONIQ V, at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, marking a significant step in its efforts to enhance its presence in the Chinese market. This model represents the first dedicated IONIQ vehicle tailored for China, part of a broader strategy to recover from declining sales in the region, where the company sold merely 125,726 units in 2024.
The IONIQ V features a sleek, single-curve design and boasts a long-range variant capable of exceeding 600 km (approximately 372 miles) on a full charge, according to China’s CLTC testing standards. Despite this impressive range, it still falls short compared to competitors like BYD's Denza Z9 GT, which offers over 1,000 km (around 644 miles).
As part of a joint venture with BAIC Group, Hyundai has pledged 8 billion yuan (about $1.2 billion) to bolster its operations in China. The automaker plans to launch 20 new models in the next five years, aiming for annual vehicle sales of 500,000 in the market. CEO José Muñoz emphasized the importance of China, citing its demanding consumers and advanced battery supply chain as critical factors for Hyundai’s renewed commitment.
